“Mr. Johnson,” commonly known as Dr. J., is a painting close to home for the artist. This was his neighbor and long-time friend.
"Mr. Johnson," more commonly referred to as, Dr. J, was a neighbor of Lavarne Ross during the 1970s and 80s. After being displaced from the St. John area to the west side of Flint, Dr. J moved across the street from Ross on Edward Street. The young neighborhood children would pick on the elderly Dr. J, who was meticulous at maintaining his yard. In the winter the children would intentionally play in the doctor’s carefully shoveled snow piles as a prank. In return, Dr. J would keep all of the toys and balls that wandered into his yard. Eventually Ross spoke with the old man, and Dr. J agreed to return the playthings to the children without further consequence. Here, Dr. J is shown sleeping in a chair on his front porch.
